After Hours Help Guide

A Lexington Women's Health Patient Resource

I think I'm labor. What do I do?

We would like to instruct you to proceed to Labor and Delivery if any of the following occur:

  • If you have regular, painful uterine contractions that increase in intensity and frequency over time. Generally, contractions should be every 3-5 minutes for 1-2 hours. Adjustment to the time frame will need to be made for those travelling longer distances.
  • If you think you are leaking amniotic fluid.
  • If you have any concerns regarding your baby's movements.
  • If you have bleeding in excess of bloody mucus.
  • According to any other specific instructions given by your provider.

I'm pregnant and bleeding. What should I do?

Vaginal bleeding is never normal during pregnancy and needs to be evaluated.

If you are in your first trimester and the bleeding is light and painless (no cramping) call during our business hours of 8:30 am and 5:00 pm Mon-Fri, and ask to be seen that day.

If you are past your first trimester, go immediately to Baptist Health Lexington's Labor and Delivery to be evaluated. If the bleeding is heavy, or accompanied by fever or pain, go to the nearest emergency facility immediately. You do not need to call us to let us know you are going. The nurses will contact us if necessary.

Common Obstetric Questions

1. Medications during pregnancy

Over the counter medications that are approved during pregnancy can be found here: https://axiawh.com/resources/approved-pregnancy-medication-list/
For prescription medications, please check with your provider or your pharmacist during regular business hours.

2. What can I do for nausea and vomiting in the first trimester?

  • Eat small frequent meals. Allowing yourself to become hungry can make nausea worse.
  • Consider a change of prenatal vitamins. You can substitute a single children’s chewable vitamin and discuss with your provider at your next visit.
  • Try ginger pops or ginger ale to settle the stomach
  • Try over the counter emetrol.
  • Discuss prescription nausea treatments with your provider during regular business hours.

3. What can I do for constipation?

Increase fluids, take stool softeners (Colace) regularly or try a gentle laxative such as Miralax according to package directions.

4. What should I do for a bad cough, cold or congestion?

Cough, runny nose, nasal congestion, and sore throat are all signs of an upper respiratory infection or allergy. These require supportive care with extra fluids and rest. Over the counter medications may be helpful in treating the symptoms. Please see our Over the Counter (OTC) Med list for recommendations. If you have fever or the symptoms persist for longer than one week, please see your primary care provider. For after hours and weekend care, consider Baptist Urgent Care or Baptist Express Care.

5. What should I do for a stomach virus?

Sudden onset of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea in pregnancy should be managed with supportive care. Electrolyte solutions such as Pedialyte can be helpful. Over the Counter (OTC) medications that are safe to consider are listed here. If you have symptoms that persist beyond 24 hours, please contact our office during regular business hours. After hours consider evaluation at Baptist Urgent Care (less than 20 weeks) or Labor and Delivery (greater than 20 weeks)

Postoperative Care

1. What should I eat?

After surgery it is important to avoid foods that cause excessive gas or constipation for you. It is also recommended to avoid carbonated beverages for the first few days to reduce the amount of bloating you feel.

2. What can I do?

Activity after surgery varies greatly from procedure to procedure. If you are not clear on what activities are allowed, please contact your provider during regular business hours.

3. When can I remove the bandages?

Band aids and gauze dressings can be removed the day after your operation. If there are small white tapes (steri-strips) over your incisions, these will fall off on their own. If they have not fallen off in one week you can remove them by pulling gently.

4. What can I do for constipation?

Colace is over the counter and an excellent stool softener. It works best when taken regularly for several days. Another option is an over the counter laxative called Miralax. You may take it according to the bottle directions.

5. What should I do if I have fever?

Temperature elevations of 100.4 and higher require evaluation by your provider. Please call during business hours for a same day appt. If your fever occurs on the weekend or over a holiday please go to Baptist Health Emergency Department to be evaluated by our emergency department providers.

6. What should I do if I have vaginal bleeding?

Vaginal bleeding after gynecologic surgery is very common and often expected. Your bleeding should be managed with a pad and not a tampon until you are cleared for tampon use by your provider. If you have very heavy bleeding, you will need to be evaluated in our office or at Baptist Health Emergency Department.

Common Gynecologic Questions

1. What do I do for urinary tract infection symptoms?

These include pelvic pain, painful urination, urinating too frequently, back pain and difficulty starting your stream of urine. We do not evaluate or treat urinary tract symptoms by phone. We will be glad to see you during normal business hours. For weekend and evening evaluation consider Baptist Urgent Care or Baptist Express Care.

2. What to do for vaginal infection symptoms?

Yeast, bacterial and viral infections all may cause discharge, burning, odor or pain. If you think you have a vaginal infection, please call us during regular business hours. We do not assess vaginal symptoms over the phone. If you require evening or weekend evaluation and treatment, consider Baptist Urgent Care or Baptist Express Care.

3. Late or missed birth control pill?

If you forget to take a birth control pill, take it as soon as you remember. If you do not remember until the next day, go ahead and take two pills that day. If you forget to take two pills then take two the day you remember and two the following day. Anytime you forget to take a pill, use another form of birth control until your next period.

4. Failed contraception or broken condom?

Emergency contraception is now over the counter for women 17 and over. For more information, call us during regular business hours, speak with your pharmacist during pharmacy hours and/or see this CDC website
